Easts Junior Rugby Club
Easts Junior Rugby Club is a family-orientated rugby club that prides itself on it’s cultural diversity. East’s home ground is Dangar Park which is arguably one of the Hunter’s most picturesque rugby fields. With strong ties to the community and an emphasis on respect and inclusion Easts Junior Rugby Club is seeing a rise in player numbers due to their highly successful Mini Phoenix Barefoot Rugby Program.
Mayfield Easts/Eastern Districts currently known as Easts Rugby Union Club was formed in 1941, in Mayfield East in the shadows of BHP in Newcastle by Fred.H.Jeans and two of his sons- Richard and Len Jeans, who tried to sign with the local team but were told they didn’t go to the right school and couldn’t play.
The father with his sons gathered as many of their friends together, and the rest of the players were recruited from the children of “Pommy Town” which was a few blocks of houses owned by Lysaghts, who had brought families from the UK to help establish their steel works adjacent to the BHP.
Easts Rugby in their 80th Season prides itself on its Cultural Diversity and being a family orientated community base, and has always embraced the many cultures that abound in the local area from Indigenous, Pacific Islanders, European, Asia as well as Africa and still evolving and welcoming different cultures.
The collaboration of Presidents Scott Ware (Juniors) and Sammy Kolo (Seniors) with their Old Boys, working together to keep a strong relationship and keep building Dangar Park as a family meeting place.
Easts currently have 4 Junior teams – Under 7s, Under 8s, Under 10s also Under 17s girls.
In the past two years they have run their Mini Phoenix Barefoot Rugby Program at Mayfield Bowling Club for ages 2-7, and their participants have since tripled to over 60 Mini Phoenix superstars loving their rugby at the bowlo.
Easts love their rugby, but also have a strong focus on keeping their young ones laughing and having fun and at the same time providing a safe and caring environment that is inclusive, disciplined and where everyone is respectful of one another. We love this, well done!
Easts Club Song
We belong to Mayfield
Dear old Mayfield town
There’s nothing the matter with Mayfield East
We’re going round and round
We’re only a couple of working lads
As anyone here can see
But after a couple of drinks (lemonades of course) on Saturday
Mayfield belongs to me
To win, to win to win
The all familiar cry
The forwards make the lightning dash
That make the varicose side
The backs are brave and bold
They’re always on the ball
Whenever you see a May East boy
He’s wearing blue and gold
