Coaching Accreditation
At Hunter Junior Rugby we encourage anyone who is interested in being a Coach or is currently already Coaching to gain as many accreditations as possible. Here are some accreditation options when it comes to Coaching Rugby:
Smart Rugby is Rugby Australia’s flagship course for building coach and match official understanding of safety considerations both on and off the field.
Many coaches and match officials in Australia receive their Smart Rugby accreditation each year. Their dedication helps to make our game safer and more enjoyable to play.
There are five Smart Rugby components are designed to help you build your understanding of the theory and application of Smart Rugby principles:
- Introduction to Smart Rugby
- Playing Smart
- Playing Smart – Technical Program
- Concussion management & Blue Card
- Injury management
Prerequisite: Smart Rugby
- About building and creating an environment that is:
FUN – SAFE – INCLUSIVE - Supporting player growth by providing coaches with knowledge, content, support and empowerment.
- Protecting the participant experience by providing optimal coaching environments.
- Therefore, a PLAYER-CENTRED focus (rather than Coach-Centered)
The Foundation Coach Certificate course is an excellent way for coaches to improve their knowledge of Rugby and represents the first step in the pathway towards Level 1 accreditation.
The course is targeted at coaches involved with youth coaching (U13 to U19 level).
It focuses on the Core Skill areas of the game, how to coach, and the relevant Laws related to each area of the game.
Course modules include:
- Foundations of the Game
- How to coach
- Constraints-led coaching & the game-based approach
- Coaching Attack
- Coaching Defence
- Coaching Tackle & Contest
- Coaching Counter-attack & transitional play
- Coaching Set piece
- Planning
Designed to provide those who enrol in the Coach Level 1 accreditation with the skills and knowledge to effectively coach the tactical & technical aspects of each element of the game.
The courses focus is on developing safe practice, skill development and sound coaching behaviours appropriate to the functional roles and maturity of youth participants.
This program is FREE OF CHARGE and is specifically designed for coaches working with 12 to 15 year-old athletes.
Awarded on successful completion of the following learning events:
- Level 1 Coaching Exam – 90% pass mark (online)
- Coaching Diary 20 Hours (self-paced assignment)
- Code of Conduct (online course)
- Member Protection and Inclusion (online course)
Course Prerequisites:
- Foundation Certificate
- Smart Rugby (current)
Designed to provide those who enrol in the Coach Level 2 accreditation with the skills and knowledge to effectively coach the tactical & technical aspects of each element of the game.
The course provides learners with opportunity to translate theory into best practice application of smart rugby technique, skill development and sound coaching behaviours for a faster and more mature player audience.
By completing this course participants will attain a dual RugbyAU/World Rugby Level 2 Coach accreditation.
This course is specifically designed for senior coaches working with adult athletes and youth coaches (U16s and above of representative teams).
Awarded on successful completion of the following learning events:
- Developing Coach Course attendance
- Level 2 Coaching Exam – 90% pass mark (online)
- Coaching Plans (self-paced assignment)
- Code of Conduct (online course)
- Member Protection and Inclusion (online course)
- Coach Level 2 Competency Assessment (field based competency assessment)
- World Rugby online courses x 4 (self-paced learning)

- Smart Rugby
