A club to watch – The Griffins
The Griffins Rugby Club has a continuous ancestry extending back to the 1920s through the Nobbys All Blacks, Port Hunter/Stockton and Tech College clubs.
However Griffins Juniors is a new entity in 2021.
2021 is their foundation year. One team. 10 kids. And a swarm of parents who have taken on every role from keeping score to Welcome to Country. The energy level is mind-boggling.
Of their 10 kids – 3 are girls, 3 are Fijians and 2 are Indigenous. The Griffins define diversity.
The club relocated to West Newcastle in 2020, a growth centre for both Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, with an expected population of around 50,000 by 2040; large enough to support a Premier Rugby club with men’s, women’s, juniors and schools teams.
Outside of the HJRU competition, the Griffins are working with 4 schools in the district; providing in-school skills sessions as well as assistance with the Callaghan College (Wallsend) Steve Merrick Cup entry. Two primary schools, one high school and one independent K-Y12 college.
The Griffins are always welcoming new players to join their club and are keen to encourage local rugby families to be a part of their journey. With experienced coaches and a whole lot of enthusiasm the Griffins already have a strong team in the U9s competition and hope to field teams in various age groups in season 2022 and beyond.
In 2022 the aim is to field 3 teams; U7-8s, U9-10s and U12-13s. If you are looking to join a passionate, diverse and growing club, contact the Griffins.
