The Mighty Maitland Blacks
Established in 1967 under the longstanding Maitland Rugby Club, Maitland Juniors has its roots firmly planted in Hunter rugby history. With a home base at Lorn in the heart of the Hunter Valley, Maitland Juniors welcomes players from 5 to 17 years old who compete as part of the Hunter Junior Rugby Union competition.
An inclusive community club, the Maitland Juniors welcomes boys and girls, of all playing levels, who want to learn the game of rugby and its values.
They train from the end of February with the season running from March to September. Girls play in this competition up to the age of 12, then participate in a girls ten-a-side competition, with Under 13s, 15s and 17s age divisions. They also have a girls seven-a-side competition with the same age divisions, running from February to April.
Maitland Juniors train throughout the week at Marcellin Park in Lorn, with games on a Saturday either at home or across the region, from Under 8s to Under 18s.
The Little Blacks Army, the club’s Under 7s competition, is based solely at Marcellin Park. Fielding at least eight full teams a season, they train once a week and play each Saturday morning at Marcellin Park.
In 2021, the club had 550 registered players from Under 7 through to 17s, fielding 34 teams and making Maitland the biggest club in the Hunter Junior Rugby competition!
Maitland Junior Rugby Club provides clear pathways to representation for those interested.
In 2021, an impressive 72 Maitland Junior Rugby Union Club players were selected for Hunter Wildfires squads across the under-10 to under-18 age groups, and at the season’s premature cut off due to covid, Maitland had 5 teams named as Minor Premiers!
It is safe to say that rugby is not only alive and well in Maitland it is on fire!
